Orkut has started aggressively targeting advertisers to monetize its social network specially in its 2 largest markets India and Brazil .Orkut was open to advertising by all adwords advertisers but those ads were shown below the scroll but now has been moved to top of the page.It is also sharing some of the comscore data about Orkut on its advertisers page
  • 13 million active Indians or about 40% of Indian online population
  • 5 billion page views from India
  • Average user visits site 10 times a month and spends 13 minutes per visit
  • Over 53% of the audience is under 25 years of age while 31% is between the age group of 25 -34 years
  • Almost 80% of the audience is male and 20 % is female
Social network advertising has not been successful and receives very low click through rates which is lower than what larger portals and extremely low compared to search marketing and even google has struggled to make money through social networks.Google however is aggressively looking at getting brand advertising in India on Orkut and is even expanding its team in India and hence the new strategy whether it succeeds or not it will be watched carefully.
