Since I am Currently involved in web Search Space in India I can say with some authority that comscore is reporting with reasonable accuracy on the search statistics in India though they are under reporting the stats maybe because they only report internet users of 15 years and above and excludes searches from public computers such as internet cafes and access from mobile phones or PDAs.According to Comscore Google sites ranked as the top search property in India with more than one billion searches conducted in June 2008, representing 81 per cent of the market with rediff being the major local player coming in 5th with 1.5% of searches.
Comscore also points out that
  • Global Brands dominate search because with the exception of Guruji and Rediff there have been few attempts to develop indigenous search in India ( other players have not been able to scale up) with likes of Indiatimes outsourcing search to google.
  • Search Intensity lags in India of the 37 countries individually reported by comScore, India ranked second to last with 53 searches per searcher during the month, well below the worldwide average of 93. India also had significantly fewer search visits per searcher (14.7 vs. 23.6) and searches per search visit (3.6 vs. 3.9).
From my own experience I know that mostly entertainment, porn and celebrity oriented searches dominate in India and since e commerce has yet to take of in a big way in India informational searches do not have similar degree of scale in the market.Nevertheless this kind of data should help search marketeers develop their strategies better
