With Orkut Being no 2 Site in India I dug up more about Orkut and its users The number of Brazilian Orkut users counts for 56.68% of the total users, followed by The United States and India, with about 18.59% and 13.27% respectively (as of February 28, 2007). However these statistics do not reflect the demographics by country in a reliable way as members are free to submit any nationality (or country of residence) they wish and many indeed do so. According to Alexa website the number of Brazilian Orkut visitors counts for 67.3% of the total users, followed by India and The United States, with about 16.7% and 3.4% respectively .It's no1 in Brazil,no2 in India and no3 in Pakistan.Globally Its no8 in the world that's awesome.

As a marketeer's point of view I found this by Siddharth B here

  • More than two thirds of the Indian Internet Users are to be found in 6 cities viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune. Thus, only those organisations which have a strong market research base in the metros can use SNS services to their advantage.
  • The target segment must be limited to consumers in the SEC A and above segment of the population, as most users come from that segment. One can see that the user base is highly educated and is employed essentially in junior or middle management.
  • Based on this, one can easily see that SNS marketing cannot be used for industries with traditionally huge marketing efforts and spends such as the FMCG industry.

An update on this post consisting of India stats is here and on that account i disagree with the above quoted points of Siddharth B and Orkut now boosts of lots of Tier 2-3 cities of India also
